The north of Swindon is rich with nature and open space, the Seven Fields nature reserve is close to Abbey Meads and is made up of you guessed it, seven individual fields, full of wildlife with some of the best wildflower meadows in Wiltshire. The area is popular amongst dog walkers and families, being beautiful in all weathers, spring, summer, autumn and winter.
Mouldon Hill Country Park is situated at the end of Thamesdown Drive and has several paths and walkways together with a hidden lake. A section of the North Wilts Canal flows through the park and has been restored by the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. The River Ray also passes through the park and is home to many species of fish and wildlife.
For the green-fingered, the initial phase of Tadpole Garden Village allotments are situated east of the village, adjacent to the Tadpole Gate area.
Many people don’t know that the North of Swindon has Roman burial grounds dating to the 4th century; these have been found around St Andrews Ridge and Purton. The most substantial find was made in 1996, when contractors developing an area uncovered the buried walls of Roman buildings. The area is now owned by Swindon Borough Council and English Heritage and is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
