Focus on North Swindon.

Posted on

Dating back to Saxon times, Swindon has evolved from a small market town to one of the UK’s top places to make a living according to the website Totally Money.

One of the most thriving areas of the town is North Swindon, which was first developed during the 1990s. Established neighbourhoods on former fields and farmland include Abbey Meads, Taw Hill, St. Andrew's Ridge, Redhouse, Oakhurst and Haydon End, with Tadpole Garden Village the most recent development.

The area has become a popular area for families due to its many commuter links, community spirit and nearby amenities. In fact, North Swindon has become so popular that house prices have gone up by a huge 18% in the last five years.

It is also a thriving young area where there is always a high demand for rental properties, from sizeable family homes to two-bedroom apartments, coach houses and studios.

Shopping

The Orbital Shopping Park is a vibrant shopping venue that accommodates high street retailers, restaurants and cafes that are perfect for everyone. The retail park includes a host of shops such as ASDA, Marks & Spencer, New Look, Topshop, Miss Selfridge and the newly opened River Island.

For food try Nando’s and for those much-needed caffeine breaks there are two Costas, one of which is situated inside Next, making shopping even more fun!

The Orbital also boasts a fantastic library for book lovers where public access computers are available for pre booked 45-minute sessions, not to mention DW Fitness for all you gym bunnies!

Communities

Perfectly located for commuting and attracting new occupants, North Swindon has many community hubs. There are plenty of mummy groups, pre-schools and friendly people who have often moved for similar reasons like work, family and housing.

Tadpole Garden Village is the most recent development and boasts some impressive houses. The area is very sought after and so “cool”, that the locals refer to it as ‘TGV’ instead of Tadpole Garden Village!

This growing community has its own shops, schools, sports facilities and children's play areas and is on the doorstep of over 149 acres of green space.

Schools

The many good schools in North Swindon include Catherine Wayte Primary School, Haydon Wick Primary School, Greenmeadow Primary School, Haydonleigh Primary School, Oakhurst Community Primary School, Orchid Vale Primary School, Red Oaks Primary School, St Francis Primary School, Abbey Park School and Great Western Academy.

Pubs

We all know how important pubs are to any area, and there are loads to choose from in North Swindon. The Blunsdon Arms is very popular, with its large garden, cute outdoor wooden cabins and spacious indoor dining. The Tawny Owl, Manor Farm, The Abbey Meads and The Jovial Monk are also much loved by local residents.

Nature

The north of Swindon is rich with nature and open space, the Seven Fields nature reserve is close to Abbey Meads and is made up of you guessed it, seven individual fields, full of wildlife with some of the best wildflower meadows in Wiltshire. The area is popular amongst dog walkers and families, being beautiful in all weathers, spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Mouldon Hill Country Park is situated at the end of Thamesdown Drive and has several paths and walkways together with a hidden lake. A section of the North Wilts Canal flows through the park and has been restored by the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. The River Ray also passes through the park and is home to many species of fish and wildlife.

For the green-fingered, the initial phase of Tadpole Garden Village allotments are situated east of the village, adjacent to the Tadpole Gate area.

History

Many people don’t know that the North of Swindon has Roman burial grounds dating to the 4th century; these have been found around St Andrews Ridge and Purton. The most substantial find was made in 1996, when contractors developing an area uncovered the buried walls of Roman buildings. The area is now owned by Swindon Borough Council and English Heritage and is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

So, there you have it, just a few good reasons why people looking for a modern property or looking to invest in buy-to-lets choose North Swindon.
